Unlike other rooms in a home which are dry areas where any type of wall covering works perfectly, bathroom walls require a special kind of wall detail.

In places like living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens, which are mostly dry, one can use almost any type of material for wall coverings with backsplashes as perfect protectors. However, the case is different in bathrooms, where water flows from all directions onto the walls.

Ceramic tiles

Balam Jr. Bifiramunda, a manager at ABC Stiles & Bathz Uganda says ceramic tiles are the standard choice for bathroom walls. However, people must be guided to apply them well, ensuring that the bathroom walls must be moisture-free all the time. Tiles must be well-designed because they have line patterns that may either boost or undermine the bathroom's appearance.

Tileboard

This is a large sheet of any of various materials with a decorative covering that looks like ceramic tiles used in interior finishings, especially for bathroom walls. Shakib Kayira, a tiles salesman with Goodwill company says the tileboard comes in large format panels. One can install 32-square feet of wall covering that looks like a tile. He adds that well-installed tile boards look exactly like real ceramic ones.

Paint

Paint is one of the cheapest ways to give bathroom walls a makeover. However, Ian Ssendagala, a paint expert warns that not all kinds of paintwork are for bathroom walls. There are two alternatives that can be used for perfect results. These are water-resistant paint and waterproof paint respectively. Water resistant paint is cheap, but not very safe. Thus, a replacement routine is needed. Use waterproof paint which contains mold-resistant primers that makes it more durable.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is another option. It is powerful in giving bathrooms a strong character. With bold patterns and colourful prints, wallpaper offers a wide array of customisation options for bathroom walls. However, Bashir Masembe of Nomaro Wallpaper Interiors says since bathroom are always wet and dump, wallpaper is likely to peel off and attract mold and moisture. Unless you are bent on decorating your bathroom walls with unusual prints, stay away from wallpaper because there are better tile alternatives in the market.

PVC bathroom panels

PVC bathroom panels are completely waterproof. Unlike tiles, the surface of PVC bathroom panels is completely impermeable and can never be affected by water. The bathroom panels are designed to fit together flawlessly and, in some cases, can be fitted over with existing tiles, saving you time and money.

Glass block

Glass block is popular in bathroom walls because of its sleek modern look and its ability to transmit light while maintaining privacy. It can be used to create walls and windows. Compared to other materials, glass block is very expensive, with the cost varying depending on the complexity of the job, labour costs, and the block that is selected.
